Ask Me! I can help! Badges are a great way to have your students take ownership of their learning, become excited to earn the badges, and create a classroom community that helps each other. You can use these badges however you would like in your classroom.
At the beginning of the year, I simply print these badges on cardstock and laminate them. Then, I bought black lanyards with an alligator clip at the end to simply clip onto the badges. These easily hang on a command hook in the classroom, where students can access them. You could also buy a pack of badge clips with or without reels. Another way you could use them is to simply cut a hole in the top and put some string through them.
For students to use, whatever skill we may be working on in class, they need to prove that they completely understand a topic or skill. This can be done through any type of assessment in your classroom. You could use quiz or test scores. You could allow students to “teach” you how to do a problem to show that they can teach other students the skill. These badges are badges of honor in the classroom. Students want to wear these!
Once a student who would like to wear a badge has proven that they understand the topic and can help others when in need, they wear the badge in class. Students who are struggling, confused, or have a question, know to ask students who are wearing this badge in class.
These are awesome because it helps eliminate the teacher getting interrupted when working in small group. It helps students who earn the badges feel empowered and helpful. It provides a safe way for struggling students to get help from a classmate, who may explain a concept in a different way than I can. It also encourages students to try their best so that they can earn a badge.
