I begin each year with the same activity. Once the students have settled into their seats, I explain that each student will introduce himself or herself and ask one question. This puts a lot of pressure on the students and raises the anxiety level immediately…until I explain that I have already created the questions and all they have to do is read this.
This activity benefits my class three-fold:
1. The students all get their encounter their first experience speaking publicly in the class
2. I am able to lay down important ground rules and establish classroom protocol in fun way
3. The day begins with a fun element of surprise
