Asking Questions Reading Strategy Introduction Lesson, Notebook File for the Smart Board
FREEBIE IN PREVIEW
Now with INTERACTIVE student notebook foldables!
This lesson begins with general information about the asking questions reading comprehension strategy.
Some work pages based on BATS, THE PUMPKIN BOOK, and SPIDERS by Gail Gibbons (similar books may be used). One work page refers to an owl nonfiction book generically so that other owl nonfiction texts may be used. More slides refer to a few sentences in THE CITY OF EMBER by Jeanne DuPrau, and one sentence in THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX by Kate DiCamillo. The sentences selected stand on their own and do not require reading of the books to understand the general idea. Some students may have read the book or seen the movies, which will help the class understand the general ideas of the sentences. The settings of the dark worlds in both stories were selected as many questions could be asked to help reading comprehension. A good reader asks questions while reading. This Notebook File fades in on every black slide to enhance thinking about darkness. It is intentionally dark to set the stage for asking questions.
The printable PDFs are at the paperclips on the second slide. After this anchor lesson, the open-ended work pages could be added to reading folders for future use. This lesson has a few student interactive slides, and is mostly a teacher-moderated discussion. The graphics on the slides should help promote student thinking.
