In this document based activity, students first analyze a political cartoon by Thomas Nast, using an interactive provided by the Smithsonian Institute. They then assess successes and failures of both presidential and congressional Reconstruction based on sets of chronological events and documents. Finally, students write a thesis statement on the extent to which Reconstruction represented a revolutionary period of success or failure. There is an example thesis and instructions on writing a thesis statement included. All documents are also hyperlinked.
