This unit assessment, which includes 15 multiple choice questions as well as short answer and model-based responses (10 more, but each short answer/model based question has several parts), is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards for high school Earth and Space Science. It meets the requirements for HS-ESS1-1 and HS ESS1-3:
HS-ESS1-1. Develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the life span of the sun and the role of nuclear fusion in the sun’s core to release energy that eventually reaches Earth in the form of radiation.
HS-ESS1-3. Communicate scientific ideas about the way stars, over their life cycle, produce elements.
Students should be able to:
- describe the five stages in the life cycle of stars.
- explain the process of nuclear fusion, including the source of fuel (hydrogen) and final products (elements produced).
- explain the relationship between a star’s mass and its life cycle.
- explain how the sun’s energy reaches Earth (radiation).
To prepare for this assessment, students can complete the following activities:
Spectroscope Lab (coming soon)
H-R Diagram Analysis (coming soon)
