This five question assessment can be easily used as a reading quiz after assigning the reading of Christopher Columbus's letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella after his fourth voyage (or as homework/classwork/etc.). I used this with my students after analyzing a letter from his first voyage together and having them read and annotate the fourth letter individually. These questions require close interaction with the text, referring to Columbus's tone and purpose while using referring to lines from the text.
In addition to these questions, we discuss the differences in Columbus's tone and how his views of the natives drastically shift from the first to fourth letter. We look to historical reasons for this attitude shift. We also analyze his purpose and how he uses rhetorical appeals to achieve his goals.
