Product Description

This product comes out of my questioning and thinking through the critical thinking competencies. I have decided to share it with you. It includes summary poster-type pages on topics that included:

What is critical thinking?

What are the critical thinking competencies?

What is the profile of a critical thinker?

What is the critical thinking—problem solving connection (in life)?

What are types of activities in the classroom that foster critical thinking?

What are some obstacles to the critical thinker ?

What are the steps to “over-coming” -- thinking differently?

"Follower”or “innovator”?

Fostering critical thinking

Also included are:

  • a chart demonstrating ways to shift one's thinking and questioning in the classroom whether after story reading or across the curriculum in order to foster critical thinking in all that is taught--a handy reminder.
  • a short “advertisement” activity that helps to think through teaching the differences of “justifying”, “analyzing” and “critiquing” to students--simple enough to apply for young children.
  • a journal type note/card for each competency, as I have with my other competency products. (These take a look at each competency and have the addition of a “framed question” that helps me and my students to think through the assessing of each competency.)

The part left for you is figuring out how you can best apply some of the competencies in learning activities that you are already teaching or will teach specifically to foster growth in this competency area. The question or statement for each competency helps the student to focus in on assessing the competency and reminds the teacher of ways to teach critical thinking. This document is about how to live life well and to the best of our abilities in the area of our thinking.
