This assignment is a good essay to use at the beginning of the semester as a sort of icebreaker. It challenges students to use concrete and sensory details to re-create for their readers a specific setting. The goal of the essay is to give a sense of how a certain event affected the student's understanding of him or herself, but this abstract idea must be expressed through accurate and precise description of the surrounding environment in which the event occurred. The assignment challenges students to develop their own authentic narrative voice, to use original metaphor (rather than cliche), and to express an idea or theme without using the formulas of the five-paragraph essay structure. (A worksheet on using simile/metaphor is available in my store and works as an in-class pre-writing assignment for this essay).
