Use word associations to enhance vocabulary development and improve metalinguistic awareness. Metalinguistics awareness is the ability to think about language beyond its structure. In this activity, students compare and contrast the meanings of words and get a better understanding of words in the process.
Why is this important? It has been found that reading comprehension and metalinguistic skills are strongly linked (Achugar, Schleppegrell, & Oteíza, 2007).
In this set of cards , students are given four words. Students determine one word that does not belong in the set of four. They then give a reason why it is not part of the group. This promotes a higher level of thought process and awareness of word meanings beyond memorizing definitions.
The cards consist of double -sided cards; side one is the prompt side and side two is the answer/explanation card. It tells what word doesn’t belong to the set. A bar code provides the explanation. The bar codes can be read by apps that are available for download on most digital devices. Check the Play store or App store on your device. An answer sheet Is provided for those unable to use the bar code.
It is possible to put an answer block over the answer side by using the TPT Digital Overlay. This would make it into a digital worksheet.
The cards are meant to be printed out on card stock. Cut on the horizontal lines and fold on the vertical lines. Glue the front card to the back card or laminate them together. This makes a nice sturdy card. This is also a digital product which allows a teacher to edit by adding answer blocks or hide the answer.
