Description

Finding simple and FUN activities to practice rhythms is difficult- but it doesn’t have to be. Asteroid is a fun, ACTIVE music game to help elementary music students practice their rhythm. This is a no touch music game, so it can be done on a normal year, but it is perfect for socially distanced teaching annnnnd distance learning via Zoom or Google Meets or whatevery platform you are using to virtual learning.

To play:

  1. Each student gets a "home base" (I use a piece of paper, you could also use hula hoops).
  2. Show the students one of the rhythm flashcards.
  3. Students take one step for each sound. For eighth notes, they would take two steps, for quarter notes they would take one, etc.
  4. When you hit an Asteroid page, students must run back to their home base. Last one to their homes is out!

For distance learning:

  1. Show the students one of the rhythm flashcards.
  2. Students take one step away from their computer for each sound. For eighth notes, they would take two steps, for quarter notes they would take one, etc.
  3. When you hit an Asteroid page, students must run back and type something in the chat. For this, I find it easier to do points for the first person back instead of eliminating someone.

In this pack, you will get 30 cards-- rhythm cards, plus asteroid cards mixed in. These are available in color and black and white (so you can put it on the screen or print it out) annnnnd regular and stick notation. There are four different files-- one for each (color regular, color stick, black and white regular, black and white stick).

You will also get instructions for regular and distance learning play.

This set is for level 1 rhythms. Level 1 rhythms include quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth notes. I use these with kindergarten, first grade, and early second grade music students.

All pages are included in regular notation and stick notation. Everything is included in color and in black and white.

Includes:

  • Instructions
  • Rhythm cards to play the game
  • Asteroid cards
  • Everything in regular and stick notation, color and black and white
