Tired of using an overhead projector and cardboard with pinholes for your constellation slides? Having trouble pointing out the shapes and connections with digital photographs?
Try something new! This packet has 23 of the most recognizable northern hemisphere constellations along with positions, names, and origins for the 20 most recognizable stars.
The packet is split into two parts. The first part lists all these constellations and stars in a mini-poster format designed to be printed and placed around the classroom. The second part is a small printable booklet for the students to fill out. Each page shows nothing more than a constellation and a lot of blanks. It's up to the students to determine which constellation they're looking at and fill in all the relevant information.
This activity is an excellent alternative to seatwork or long notes as it gets students up and moving.
Illustrations are from a set of cards called Urania's Mirror published in London in 1825.
