This lab activity includes two possible ways to create scale models of our solar system. In each activities, students will have to do some math to properly scale the distances of the planets from the sun.
The first version involves using a roll of toilet paper to create the model. Each sheet of toilet paper represents a specific distance in the solar system. Students count out the number of sheets to each planet, and then mark on the toilet paper roll where that planet falls.
In the second version, students draw a model of the solar system on the pavement using sidewalk chalk. Students then can use a device (their phone) to do a "video tour of the solar system" using their model. They then post their video for review onto the class's website (in this case Schoology - although any LMS could work).
