This is a whole unit on Modern Astronomy. This unit covers more recent astronomers, from Copernicus and Kepler to Newton, Einstein, and Hubble. We get into how they made their discoveries, and how their discoveries changed the entire way we view and study the universe. In this package you will get everything you've seen individually in more store plus several extra bonus materials.
This package includes:
1. Sample pacing/lesson plans for the unit.
2. Lecture notes:
-"The Birth of Modern Astronomy": introduces students to the discoveries of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Tycho Brahe and how those discoveries changed our view of the universe. A student handout is included.
-"Orbits and Gravity": introduces students to Isaac Newton and how he saw that mass and gravity affected movement and the universe. This lecture also gets into how Einstein's ideas of relativity fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe. A student hand out is included.
-"The Big Bang": introduces the ideas of the Big Bang Theory as well as the make up of the universe. A student hand out is included.
-"Galilean Moons": students graph the orbits of the 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter and analyze their orbits.
-"Kepler's Laws": students graph the orbits to Mercury and Mars and apply Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion to see if they follow the laws.
-"Gravity Problems": students calculate how their weight and jumping abilities would be different on different planets.
-"Computer Simulation: Orbital Motion": students run a Java simulation that allows them to manipulate variables that affect an objects orbit around another object.
-"Big Bang Balloon Inflation": Students model the ideas of the Inflationary Universe by inflating a balloon and measuring how fast different points on the balloon are moving away from each other.
-"Evidence for the Expanding Universe": This activity builds on the Balloon activity. Students analyze the spectra of several different galaxies to see if there is evidence for the Inflationary Universe.
ALL Activities and Worksheets include answer keys.
4. Unit test and accompanying study guide (both with answer keys).
5. BONUS Materials Included in this unit:
-"Video Questions": these questions go along with a "Crash Course Astronomy" video on Gravity as well as several other You Tube videos on the Big Bang Theory. These videos can be found on YouTube.
-Term List: A list of vocabulary for the unit. This list is set up in a way that makes it easy to transfer into any format you wish to use (crossword, Quizlet, etc.).
-Crossword Puzzle Vocab Review: based on the above Term List.
Answer keys are included with all materials.
This unit should take 2-3 weeks to complete.
