This is a whole unit on the Sun-Earth-Moon System. This unit covers the Earth and its makeup, the Sun and its makeup, the moon and its makeup, and how all three interact to create the seasons, moon phases, eclipses, and the tides
This package includes:
1. Sample pacing/lesson plans for the unit.
2. Lecture notes:
-"The Earth": covers Earth's formation and violent childhood, touches upon the geosphere (and interior), atmosphere (and greenhouse effect), magnetosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere as well as discussing the concept of time on Earth.
-"The Sun and The Moon": introduces students to Earth's moon and the sun. The lecture discusses the theories for the formation of the moon as well its geologic makeup and surface features. As for the sun, this lecture discusses how the sun makes energy, the different layers of the sun, and the features (flares, prominences, etc) created by its fluctuating magnetism.
-"The Sun-Earth-Moon": discusses how the orbits of the Moon around the Earth and both around the Sun affect use here on Earth. This includes the phases of the moon, lunar and solar eclipses, and the tides.
-"Time and the Sun": students graph an “analemma” by plotting the altitude of the sun at noon on different days of the year.
-"The Sun, the Moon, and Seasons": students graph the maximum altitude of the sun and the moon in the sky throughout the year in order to study the seasonal changes in both the sun and the moon's path throughout the sky.
-"Lunar Phases": students plot the locations of the moon around the Earth for one month in order to see the orientation of the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon during each phase.
-"Paper Plate Moon Phases": students create their own "flip book" model of the phases of the moon using paper plates.
-"The Moon and Tides": students graph high and low tide data in order to study the fluctuations in these figures throughout the month.
ALL Activities and Worksheets include answer keys.
4. Unit test and accompanying study guide (both with answer keys).
5. BONUS Materials Included in this unit:
-"Video Questions": these questions go along with "Crash Course Astronomy" videos on the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, Tides, Moon Phases, and Eclipses. These videos can be found on YouTube.
-Term List: A list of vocabulary for the unit. This list is set up in a way that makes it easy to transfer into any format you wish to use (crossword, Quizlet, etc.).
Answer keys are included with all materials.
This unit should take 2-3 weeks to complete.
