The Cards of Life presents topics for conversation to peel back the layers of communication and develop honest and vulnerable dialogue with students. At-Risk youth come from many diverse backgrounds and they are stifled by the cultural traditional phrase "What goes on in this house stays in this house" therefore harvesting their pain and anguish which manifests itself with anger and acting out. It is recommended to read the book, The Cards of Life by Dr. Erica Pooler then begin the discussion or journal reflection of one card a day. This will begin to open the doors of communication and help students learn to play the hand that they have been dealt in the cards of life without making excuses for failing. Rather using their circumstances and a reason to succeed.
