This is another student favorite "Choose Your Own Adventure" PPT where the class plays the role of Inca leader, Atahualpa. They first must make decisions on how to deal with the outbreak of civil war against his brother, Huascar. Then, depending on what decisions are made, the class will need to decide how to respond to strange foreigners arriving in their empire (The Spanish). I like to tell my students before we begin that there is only one path that will reveal what actually did happen historically and that all the others are alternative history. Students usually get into it and try to figure out which decisions are based on historical fact. They also get a kick out of all the brutal fates that await Atahualpa.
This can be used as a warm-up or transitional activity when covering Spanish conquest and conquistadors, Exploration, or the Inca empire in general. My classes enjoy to go through the various fates several times, so you can do as many "rounds" as you'd like.
