For this activity, you will need at least 6 baskets/ziploc bags and some "clues." I used a jumprope (Sparta), trophy (Sparta), Poem/sheet music (Athens), Beaded necklace (Athens), broken painted pottery (Athens), ballot box (Athens), and a plastic knife (Sparta), but you could use any kind of clues related to these city-states that you choose. Students will rotate around the room or from station to station to view each item and use inference skills to determine what they know about the city state and what they know about each item in order to figure out which city-state it is meant to represent. The worksheets are set up in chart from as "I can tell this is from.... because I see...and I already know...." form. My students always love this. I usually give them plastic gloves and magnifying glasses, just to make them feel like real detectives.
