This is an 8 day assignment that includes 4 main parts to cover the unit topic - but is easily adaptable to suit your needs on time and content. Students will complete parts 1 and 2 on their own. Part 1 includes an Internet "scavenger hunt" for information on the Atmosphere as they complete a worksheet (also included). Part 2 increases further understanding of the atmosphere with a drawing and labeling assignment. Parts 3 and 4 are completed as a small group or team. In part 3, students must research and organize information regarding the ozone layer and create a brochure/newsletter regarding their findings. In part 4, the team will study the theory of global warming and after doing some research they will create a group essay that expresses their findings and opinions. Instructions for all 4 parts are included, as is the scavenger hunt worksheet for part 1. This activity can be adapted and changed to fit different grade levels or available time. I have at times adapted it and used only portions of the activity when time was a factor. Also, the essay requirements for part 4 can be adjusted for different grade levels. You may not require middle schoolers to analyze ice core data on graphs to come up with the same conclusions that high school students would.
