*** Let students BE the Secretary of Defense under President Truman in this fun performance task debating the use of the Atomic Bomb! ***
This task includes a unique scenario to put the students into the right frame of mind as a cabinet member in the Truman Presidency. The scenario is in the form of a letter written by the Chief of Staff. It details the assignment at hand for the Secretary of Defense, and it outlines what President Truman is looking for. You can easily make a rubric based on Truman's requirements.
This can be extended into a week-long project, and you can hold a cabinet meeting in class, or it can be done as a one day/night assessment. This can also be modified for different grades. This particular assessment was design for 8th graders.
