In this project, students begin with a thirteen document scaffolding activity, where they analyze both primary and secondary documents that either support or oppose the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Scaffolding questions accompany each document. I then have students create a T-chart outlining arguments from the documents. Students then use their T-chart to debate whether the bombing was justified or unjustified. After students debate, there are two options for an extension writing activity. Students can either complete the document based essay, where they use documents to express whether the bombing was justified or unjustified. The second option is to write a letter to President Truman either supporting or opposing his decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. The answer key for the scaffolding questions is included.
