BUNDLE: Atomic Structure Unit

Full Atomic Structure Unit that covers all NYS Atomic Concepts located in the Chemistry Curriculum guide. Start off the unit with an It’s all about the Atom flip book which covers what an atom is, parts of an atom, important vocabulary, and how to use the Periodic Table in Atomic Structure. Reinforce learning by having students complete an It’s All about the Atom Warm Up which requires students to utilize the Periodic Table and new vocabulary for a given element. Students will then create a mini book illustrating the History of the Atom and the contributions scientists have made to the knowledge of the structure of the atom. Once the mini book and envelope are made, and the content is discussed, students can then play The History of the Atom Memory Game. Set up just like Memory, students win the game by making the most matches between a scientist and what their model determined. Next, students will learn more about the Bohr model of the atom and how to draw Bohr models by filling in guided notes. For further practice, students will create their own Bohr model for an element of their choosing with the Design your own Bohr model Activity. Students will then learn about terms such as ground state, excited state, electron configurations and spectral lines by filling in guided notes. Practice multiple choice questions will help reinforce concepts learned. Staying with the concepts of the Bohr model and electron configurations, students will then fill in notes on Valence electrons and Dot diagrams. As additional practice, students can then fill in a chart that covers much of the important vocabulary discussed in the beginning of the unit, as well as, drawing Bohr models, electron configurations, valence electrons, and dot diagrams. The unit ends with the concept of Isotopes. Students will fill in guided notes on what isotopes are and how to calculate a weighted average mass. For hands on practice, students can then do the Isotopes Activity which allows them to practice determining the percents of isotopes for a given element in nature, and then use these percents to calculate the weighted average mass for that element. As a review of the entire unit, students can then answer a series of task cards.
