This lesson includes a 35 slide PowerPoint covering atomic structure, atoms, protons, electrons, neutrons, subatomic particles, (basic chemistry), two student foldables, foldable instructions, links to many additional resources (including a free app), downloadable fonts, embedded video, and video wrap up! Created for elementary and middle school students.

This PowerPoint is a great introduction and practice to help students understand the concepts of atoms, subatomic particles, and basic chemistry. This lesson is hands on and interactive. Foldables are extremely popular in my classroom! Students learn via creating and decorating a trifold foldable covering protons, neutrons, and electrons (subatomic particles) and a mini book foldable that describes the basics of atoms. Highly engaging, high level thinking activity / lesson. Perfect for classroom that utilize interactive notebooks.

Includes “I will” and “We will” daily goals that teachers may post. “I will” and “we will” goal statements are aligned with the fundamental five method of teaching, but will work for any teacher who posts daily class goals or just wants to impress any administrators who walk through their classrooms!

This lesson is ready to go with NO PREP REQUIRED! Would work well with a sub if desired.

Concepts covered include atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, charges of subatomic particles, atomic mass, and atomic number. High level thinking strategies and differentiated activities allow for different learning styles. Detailed presenter notes in the PowerPoint anticipate student questions, and provide talking points for instructors. Additional teaching tips and resources for enrichment are included at no additional cost! Approximately three class periods in length. Could easily be modified to be shorter or longer depending on the needs of specific classes. As a point of reference I teach a 50 minute class.

Please note: to protect the integrity of my work and to respect the large amount of time I have devoted to developing this resource, the PowerPoint is protected from editing. This in no way prevents you from accessing or using all the many features of the product. A PDF version of the PowerPoint is also included, so you can use the presentation even if you do not have Microsoft PowerPoint on your computer! Created by Mister Science.

Common Core Standards addressed in this lesson:

Analyze the author's purpose in providing an explanation, describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text.

This standard is met when students read and take notes over the description of atoms and subatomic particles.

Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).

This standard is met when students compare the description of atoms in the PowerPoint text and create diagrams illustrating those concepts.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) addressed in this lesson:
PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter

Substances are made from different types of atoms, which combine with one another in various ways.

MS-PS1 MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe atomic composition.

This standard is met when students view and then draw their own atoms as a part of the foldable notes.
