I love this poem! I always open up the year with this poem and let my students know that their attitude and disposition for learning math in my class will be a great influence on the kind of year that they will have. I often give this as a homework assignment on the first day of school. Students are to write a one paragraph essay on what this poem means to them in regards to their current math class. It's always sparked very insightful responses from my students. I usually reread them at the end of the first marking period and return it to them with comments as a way to motivate them to stay on track.
