How do we motivate our student audience members to devote quality attention to what is happening onstage? We do this by helping them to understand, that as audience members, they are accomplices in the creative process.

The “Active Audience” Approach in this lesson provides a structure in which student audience members develop a critical eye and performers develop clarity of purpose. It also fosters an emotionally safe environment for all.

A detailed explanation of the "Active Audience" Approach is included in this package. Graphic organizers for actors and audience members are also provided. These offer great scaffolds for developing speaking and listening skills.

This approach not only applies to theatre arts classes, but also to other educational environments in which projects are presented. It can be adapted for use in all grade levels.
