I created a series of audio summaries for my students to use with some of their favorite books. This is not an audiobook for Bud, Not Buddy. These summaries should be used together with the novel. I created these summaries mostly for my struggling readers who had trouble passing their Accelerated Reader quizzes. The students would read the novel, and at the end of every other chapter they would listen to a recording of me explaining some of the actions and ideas that were covered.
The mp3’s can be used in a variety of ways. Since our school has a classroom set of iPads, I just loaded the files on the iPads so the students could listen and read side by side. If a teacher has a computer, tablet or phone, the files can be directly played by the student or teacher. However, a teacher could email the files to students to use on their own devices.
The summaries can be a great learning tool since students get immediate feedback regarding what they have just read, and they get a little follow up with some extra tid-bits. I found that even struggling readers, when they use the audio summaries while reading the novel, were able to pass their Accelerated Quizzes and had a much firmer understanding of the book.
On a side note, even though I originally created these summaries for struggling readers, many of my other higher-skilled classroom readers requested to use the summaries as well because they say it enhanced their understanding of the story.
