This is for the student who says, "But I am saying that!" I had a student this year who really struggled hearing the difference between /sh/ and /ch/. So, I needed a way to informally assess him to see just how much he was hearing a difference between two sounds and if he was able to actually produce the two different sounds when presented with a visual.
Use the Auditory Discrimination Assessment to see what minimal pairs the student needs to work on. Then use this information to decide which minimal pair assessment to administer.
This assessment can be given two different ways.
The first way would be to tell the student for example: "We are working on the /sh/ sound. Each time I say a word, give me a thumbs up if you hear the /sh/ sound and and thumbs down if you don't. Then you would read the list of /sh/, /ch/, and mixed /sh/ and /ch/ words. Tally the results.
Once the child can produce both target sounds, make two copies of the sound pair that you need. Then use my cover system which only allows the student to see the pictures. Use your copy to tally correct vs. incorrect productions. Use the data graphing rubric included to show progress during your IEP meetings!
The following INITIAL position minimal pairs are included:
★ /sh/ vs. /ch/
★ /sh/ vs. /s/
★ /t/ vs. /s/
★ /z/ vs. /s/
★ /k/ vs. /t/
★ /g/ vs. /d/
★ /th/ vs. /f/
★ /v/ vs. /f/
★ /v/ vs. /b/
★ /r/ vs. /w/
★ /L/ vs. /w/
This could very easily be incorporated into your early intervention process! Use this for the child struggling with phonological awareness.
