Yes, August means Back to School for many of us, but did you know it's also the month to celebrate National Eat Outside Day, Book Lover's Day, and National Dog Day?!
Use this game for word work, a literacy station, or early finishers, or use this as a Friday Fun-day activity. We've taken the format of the Scattergories game and created a resource that helps with vocabulary development, creating thinking, team building, and word work! Oh, and did we mention that it's FUN
Everything you need is included - and you get both color and blackline versions of five game lists and recording sheets. The five different game lists come with three on a page, and the recording sheets have three on a page, too. This will allow you to play the game multiple times using different letters.
For August, these are the celebrations:
• Book Lover's Day (Aug. 9)
• National Aviation Day (Aug. 16)
• National Dog Day (Aug. 26)
• Eat Outside Day (Aug. 31)
• Back to School
If you've never played Scattergories, this is how it works: You roll or select a letter of the alphabet, then give a specified amount of time to allow kids to fill in words by the clue phrases. For example, you might respond to the clues like this:
topic: Back to School
letter rolled: L
↝ sound heard on the first day of school = laughing
↝ transportation to school = limousine
↝ something to take to school = lunch
The fun truly begins when you share answers and only get a point if no one else has the same answer—tricky, tricky! Creative responses will be rewarded! You may play as individuals, partners, or teams. There are so many options to customize this to make it work for YOU!
Take your students' learning to the next level—tie these games in with other learning or fun activities: research breeds of dogs, Skype with an aviator or an author, share book talks on favorite reads, and - for sure - eat outside!
