Learn a fun Australian Christmas poem with yoru students this December! Santa Koala is a rhyming text and an engaging language and literacy activity for your early learners. Read, listen, learn language and do the actions - a truly integrated learning experience!

You can teach students the rhyme and action while projecting the words onto your board or by printing the text out onto paper.

As well as the one page color text to share with the class, this printable pack includes:

  • one page blackline version
  • digital slide to project on your board
  • cloze worksheet (cut and paste 4 words into correct position to complete the text)
  • picture cards to make puppets or visuals to retell or decorate a bulletin board
  • blackline picture cards - great scissor skills activity and making student puppets
  • word cards to remake the text in a pocket chart
  • a tracing page (trace 5 night stars)
  • a one page craft - Santa Koala with tracing lines
  • a quick writing craft (Santa sack wish list) - students can write or draw what they would like for Christmas, then cut and display their work (no gluing or assembly)

This rhyme can be linked to learning about Christmas in Australia.

Bonus Digital Text

I've included a bonus digital version of the poem to read as an enlarged text for collaborative, modelled or shared reading with your class. Project this onto your board in presentation mode in Easel by TpT (it's very easy).

Read, share and discuss with it as you would a Big Book in your morning literacy hour. Use the Easel tools to annotate the text and look at text features and language patterns and word study. It can also be distributed to students for reading digitally.
