Here's your chance to talk Australian - or 'strine' as we would say down under. This is a collection of eight monologues from a period of time in Australia when the accent and idiom were at their height - the 1880's to the 1920's. The works are by Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson and C J Dennis. The slang and idiom will make these pieces a challenge but one that can be undertaken by the serious students of performance. Research will be required into both history and language for the outcome to be truly successful. The material provides an opportunity to explore comedy, pathos and different character voices. The meter of the pieces will compel the narrator along but it is a ride he or she must control if these pieces are to be done well. Suggestions and questions are provided to guide the performer and there is a checklist that can be used to evaluate performance.
