***Now includes my "Break Down A Research Paper Into Ten Steps"***
This 7-week-long student-centered research project unit invites students to problem solve and look at different media sources through a critical lens. It combines language arts, math, social studies (including government), and business to create small and large projects throughout the unit.
Largely independent, this project could be used in many ways. This could be solely for your higher-order thinkers while you lead a more structured research unit with your mainstream students. Or, your whole class could do this activity, differentiating by allowing your higher-order thinkers to work independently while you spend the time you need to support students who struggle in your classroom.
Furthermore, students are invited to use their creative juices in a variety of final projects--from filming a short documentary to creating a photo-essay. Students put together a presentation to share their findings with their classmates, leading to their ultimate (and entirely optional) goal: a student-driven service project.
If you choose to do a service project with your students, have your students in each classroom vote for the presentation they like best, and together, they create and implement a service project based on that presentation. This is the ultimate authentic project, and students attain total ownership as they work to help better the world.
