Looking for a rigorous and engaging culminating activity for your readers' or writers' workshop? This author study project will encourage reading for meaning, critical thinking, authentic writing, and research.
This project encourages students to read at least two fiction books by the same author. The student will complete various activities for each book that encourage critical thinking and analysis. These activities include:
- story map
- main idea
- book review
- choice work
Additional activites that support and encourage writing, include:
- double bubble map to compare and contrast texts
- webs for prewriting
Students completing this project will write an opinion piece, and a piece that compares and contrasts. Activitites provided also help students complete research on the author of their choice that will help them better understand the author's work.
Choose to do this entire project with your class or use individual activites that fit the needs of your students.
End this project with a choice of culminating activities, listed in a choice board!
Third grade common core standards addressed in each activity are listed on each page.
