Are you looking for a unit that systematically teaches common core language arts standards? In 19 lessons, you'll find that your students will have made demonstrable gains in the language arts literature strand, craft and structure. This unit is written for 5th and 6th graders, but could be easily modified for 4th graders. It contains complete lessons plans, worksheets, rubrics, specific techniques for intervention and acceleration, chart descriptions, literature links and assessments. Cynthia Rylant's short stories and novel, "Missing May", are used for whole class instruction. No need for multiple copies of novels, since books from a variety of authors can be utilized in book club groups. If you haven't tried a workshop approach, this unit makes its implementation not only easy, but very productive. Students are kept accountable for their learning and you will have time to meet the needs of your diverse students.
