Encourage student reading with an author study! Pick a selection of authors for your students to study and allow them to pick out a book written by one of those authors. Each student reads a different book and becomes the expert on that book. Then guide their reading, thinking, and discussions through independent and group activities. This unit includes all the materials necessary for 2 independent and 2 group activities, along with a page of steps to implement the author study.
I do this project every year during the last few weeks of school. Students love discovering new books to read over the summer, and I enjoy that it is very student guided. This would also be a great project for state testing time, or before breaks!
