You have an author visit booked for this school year? Lucky you! You are in for a real treat and your students will remember this day for a long time to come.
As a school librarian, I have had the honor of hosting several dozen author visits. I have found that the best visits occur when students and teachers have been prepped and prepared for the visit. That means learning about the visiting author, reading the books, and engaging in some meaningful activities.
I have created an 18 activity resource to use both before and after an author visit. The activities are divided into 6 sections:
Section 1) Building Excitement:
Learn all about the author who is coming to visit your school. Kids will find ways to feel connected to the author and it builds excitement for the big day.
Section 2) Expectations:
Make sure the children understand why the author is visiting, what he / she is there to talk about and what is expected of an audience member.
Section 3) Welcome Decorations:
Activities to create a pennant banner or book wall to welcome the author.
Section 4) Author Welcome Book:
Let your students share what they think is special about their school and community.
Section 5) After the Visit:
Activities to help your students reflect on their experience.
Section 6) Anytime Author Activties:
Use these before OR after the author visit.
