I always celebrated my kids and their writing every time we published. It kills me when I hear that kids go through all the steps to produce a piece of writing and no one BUT YOU sees it! Time to change your thinking! With this product you will not only show your kids that writing is valued and important but that others think so too! Inviting in parents and having groups of kids read their writing, recognizing their efforts and reflecting is at the core of motivating kids to write and write a lot. I am not one to have kids stand up in front of large groups of people but rather have kids in groups of 4-5 sharing with 4-5 adults.
In the age of Common Core and the rigorous demands of writing in the three intents, you will be able to demonstrate to your students’ families all that the kids are capable of, while showing what an amazing teacher of writing you are!
A motivating factor of an authors’ reception is the feedback the kids receive from their guests. Many times though, I have found that parents/adults don’t know how to give feedback so I have created “cheat sheets” to align with skills taught in the different writing intents. Of course, parents can add their own comments but this helps them head in the right direction and makes the writer feel great. These are all positive comments!
Comments can be written on feedback cards I have created. Each card measures roughly 3” x 5” and can be edited to insert a photo of the writer or simply to add their name to the card. I would print them on cardstock for durability. Kids absolutely love getting these cards! Another way to give the feedback at the reception/celebration is on the large 8.5 x 11 “Comments for” cards, which are also editable. I put these on clipboards and they are passed around after each writer shares. Again, the kids love receiving these at the end of the celebration!
The way you organize your event is up to you! I always had food, decorated tables and made a big deal out of the celebration. I cannot tell you how it inspires kids to want to do their best and be their best. This product is guaranteed to put you head and shoulders above the rest.
***The feedback “cheat sheets” have general comments pertaining to content of writing, not punctuation and grammar usage. The “cheat sheets” comments are geared for writers in K-2 but the rest of the product can be used for K-5.
