This unit is focused on the CCSS standard RI2.8 Even if you are not teaching Common Core, this should still be valuable to use to teach students how we can determine the author’s point in a text and find facts that support that point. In the first lesson, students review what makes something a fact and what makes it an opinion. In a later lesson students use what they have learned about opinion to write a short paragraph of their own, making a point and supporting that point with reasons.
