Students often have a difficult time trying to determine what the author's purpose of a piece of text is.

In this AUTHOR'S PURPOSE resource, your students will be exposed to ways that they can learn how to determine the author's purpose.

A primary kid-friendly way to teach author's purpose.

"SIT and enjoy a good book" is the theme of the anchor chart.

S - SWAY : the purpose is to sway the reader into the author's ideas or opinions (a palm tree is the visual)

I - INTEREST: the author's purpose is to grab the reader's attention and entertain the reader (a light bulb for an idea/interest is the visual)

T - TELL: The author's purpose is to tell or teach the reader something new/ some facts (a brain is the visual)

There is a colored poster for S.I.T. and one for students to color.

There is a printable where students can practice an author's purpose lesson as a class.

20 AUTHOR'S PURPOSE task cards are included for students to work independently, as part of a work on reading center or in small groups/partners. The task cards ask students to choose the Author's Purpose and tell how they know.

These cards have the following topics that all have examples of S I T using the same topic to show students that authors can have different purposes with the same topic/theme.
