Use this project to extend your lesson on author's purpose and deepen your student's understanding of author's craft and language while developing 21st century skills. Students will complete a set of writing prompts to persuade, inform, entertain, explain and describe and will work as a class to create their own bakery menu of author's purpose pies.
I use this project after having my student's analyze several short stories for author's use of language and purpose in both whole group and small group reading and writing lessons. This project makes a great independent performance based assessment. It can be completed digitally or use the PDF file to create a beautiful bulletin board or hallway display. My students are always excited to share this project with their families and peers.
I teach author's purpose and craft in October. Therefore, the prompts I've included are all Halloween and Fall related, but you could easily use your own prompts.
To add their writing, students just need to insert a text box for each piece. Author's Purpose labels (persuade, inform, entertain, explain, and describe) are also editable for flexibility in your own classroom.
