Teaching the author's purpose of a text can be challenging. Students have a difficult time remembering what each purpose means and what type of text correlates to each. This one-page document has two bookmarks, which can be cut apart in a half sheet, and even laminated to be used for many future books.
With a three-column table of information on author's purpose, the student is able to easily learn and reference:
*the acronym PIE
*what each letter stands for
*words to look for when reading
*examples of each type of text
The bookmarks on this page can be used as a quick reference for students to look over when reading their own book, guided reading books, whole class text, or at-home choices of reading.
Other options could be to place on a student's desk, send home for parents to use when reading with their child, and/or place around the classroom for a hands-on reference.
