Are your students struggling with understanding what P.I.E. really means? This packet takes Author's Purpose - Persuade, Inform & Entertain to the next level in helping student's understand the author's purpose in writing a selection.
Use the "What is the Author's Purpose?" graphic organizer to introduce P.I.E., not just introducing the words, but questions that connect to P.I.E. that will get the students thinking about what persuade, inform and entertain really mean. After using the graphic organizer to introduce it, have the students read the selection and answer the question - "What are your thinking?" "Does this selection really fit in this category?" This graphic organizer will promote conversation and critical thinking skills, as students look for evidence to prove their answers.
Packet also includes a practice activity that encourages students to think about their placement of cards by asking questions, like "Does it make you want to do/say/buy something?"
Also included is a writing activity that will really encourage students to think about the language involved in P.I.E, as they use different words to convey the message of persuade, inform and entertain. Students will use the "Author's Purpose Through Writing" to rewrite titles or portions of the selection to fit in the appropriate category.
*Just added- A set of 4 task cards and answer sheet. The students will read the task cards, and then find proof that the text is or is not written to entertain, persuade, or inform. Encourages deep processing as students must prove the purpose of the text, but also prove what the purpose it isn't.
Fun, interactive really encourages deep processing!
