Learning Objective

Students will read short passages and determine whether the author's purpose was to persuade, inform, entertain, explain, or describe.

Author's Purpose: This craftivity provides a fun way to practice identifying an author's purpose for writing a short passage using the more advanced PIE'ED method:

  • persuade
  • inform
  • entertain
  • explain
  • describe

Choose between the print version and the TpT Digital Easel version.

Students will read the five short passages (check out page 2 of the preview to see the passages!), and determine the author's purpose for writing each passage.

Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

TPT DIGITAL EASEL VERSION- This is a paperless version that can be completed on a device. Each slide contains a short reading passage. Students read each passage and then drag the correct pie into the "order box". The digital version contains eleven reading passages: the same five passages that are on the printable version, plus six additional passages.

I used to teach this skill using the PIE method, but quickly realized that my upper elementary students were not adequately prepared for state tests when I only used verbs like "persuade", "inform", and "entertain". A few years ago, I switched to the PIE'ED method and created my own materials to use. You can click on the links below to take a peek at my other PIE'ED products!
