After learning about author's purpose, students can complete this writing activity by writing to persuade, inform, and entertain!
I gave each student a snowman marshmallow Peep, and they wrote three different pieces of writing about their Peep. They persuaded people to eat Peeps, to purchase Peeps, not to eat them, etc. They informed their audience by providing descriptions of the treat and listing nutrition facts, which I projected on the smart board (included on the second page of this document). Last, they wrote a fictional story about their Peeps to entertain their audience.
My fourth graders had a lot of fun with this activity and were really motivated to write! I mounted their writing on colored construction paper and hung them in the hall.
