Description

These four print-and-go tri-folds target the skill of determining the author's purpose. Use these author's purpose tri-folds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who could benefit from targeted author's purpose instruction and who needed additional opportunities to practice identifying the author's purpose after reading. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These author's purpose trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Tri-fold #1: In the first two panels, students are introduced to the terms PERSUADE and INFORM. On Panel C, students identify whether each statement is persuasive or informative. The remaining two panels include 4 short reading passages. After reading each passage, students must determine whether the author's purpose was to persuade or inform. In this foldable, I stress that persuasive pieces of writing often contain both informative statements and persuasive statements. However, when an author’s main purpose is to inform, they usually only use informative statements.

Tri-fold #2: In the first two panels, students are introduced to the terms ENTERTAIN and EXPLAIN. On Panel C, students identify whether each statement is entertaining or explanatory. The remaining two panels include 5 short reading passages. After reading each passage, students must determine whether the author's purpose was to persuade, inform, entertain, or explain.

Tri-fold #3: The main objective of Book #3 is to have students identify the author’s SPECIFIC purpose. In this foldable, students are no longer allowed to answer with a simple word, like persuade. Instead, they must expand their answer into a complete sentence, and state what the author is trying to persuade them to do. Students may refer to the sentences starters on Panel B as they write the author’s specific purpose throughout the rest of the foldable. In all, students read 8 passages and write complete sentences that identify the author's specific purpose.

Tri-fold #4: The main objective for this tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to identifying the author's purpose. Students will likely encounter questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 5 different passages followed by 5 multiple choice questions.
