This set of 24 task cards presents students with a description of a piece of writing and they must decide why the author wrote it. There are some that could be argued for inform or persuade, so I encourage students to talk about their thinking with each other and provide evidence of their thinking. There is a recording sheet and an answer key. While the cards are in color, they also print well in grayscale. These are a great addition to your small group instruction, literacy centers, or even as an assessment.
