Included is a page with labels of “Persuade”, “Inform”, and “Entertain.” Then, there are 16 task cards with simple writing phrases, sentences, or paragraphs. These can be categorized into the P, I, or E categories to provide a brief introduction to author's purpose.
Review these passages with students. Discuss why students categorized each item as they did. Doing so will help them understand the nuances of author’s purpose. Can they rewrite a passage to be a different category?
