My energetic students love when I tape these task cards around the room to let them MOVE while reviewing PIE (Persuade, Inform, Entertain).
These 10 author’s purpose task cards require students to read closely and use clues to determine their answer, which integrates the reading skill of making inferences, which means students practice 2 skills at once! (Woohoo! High-5! ✋)
2 Ways to Play
1. Less support: Search the Room
Post the cards around the room. Independently or in pairs, students locate task cards, read the passages carefully to determine which the reason the author was writing, and record their answers on their leveled answer document. (For added support, students can carry the labeled photos with them to refer to as needed.)
2. More support: Stationary Center
Provide students with the task cards and photographs of the answers. Students match the picture cards with the task card descriptions and record their answers on the response sheet. For further differentiation, choose from 3 differentiated levels of student response sheets.
This activity is based on 4th grade ELA standards.
