Here's a hands-on way to practice author's purpose! It also makes a creative bulletin board or school hallway display!
I have used this version with my 2nd and 3rd grade students. (I take it a step further and use the PIE'ED version with my 4th and 5th grade students, adding "explain" and "describe".) ALL grade levels have thoroughly enjoyed this activity!
Students color their pie and crust, cut it out, and glue it together. They write definitions for persuade, entertain, and inform. Then they read the passage on three of the pie slices, and label the author's purpose for writing each passage. (Student friendly directions with visual supports are included!)
