Did you know that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder)? You probably personally know one or more individuals with autism, especially being an educator! April is Autism Awareness Month so make sure your class knows all about ASD. This document is packed with age appropriate activities, informational resources, and more, to help you start the conversation about autism.

** This document is for grades 3-5 (but there is flexibility depending on how you want to use the materials, so it could work for 2nd grade or 6th grade as well).

This document includes:

♥Page 1: Cover Page

♥Pages 2-4: ASD Informational Posters/Pages. These pages provide answers to questions such as; What is autism? Who has autism? What is sensory sensitivity?

♥Pages 5-19: Autism Flip-Book. This flip-book comes in both color, and black and white. Each page of the book focuses on a different aspect about autism while telling a story of two friends.

♥Pages 20-22: Additional Resource Pages. There are three pages listing other resources (books and videos) that you can use to teach about autism.

♥Pages 23-24: Book and Video Review Worksheets. These pages can be used after reading/ watching any of the resources listed above about autism.

♥Page 25: Autism KWL worksheet. Students will fill out what they already Know about autism, what they Want to know, and what they Learned.

♥Page 26: Autism Acrostic Poem.

♥Pages 27- 28: Autism True or False. Students will identify if each statement about autism is true or false. Answer key is provided.

♥Page 29: "Light it Up Blue" Note Home. A world-wide way to celebrate Autism Awareness is to wear blue. This is a note you can send home reminding parents to send their child into school wearing blue.

♥Pages 30- 34: Sensory Sensitivity Activity. It is common for individuals with ASD to experience a form of sensory sensitivity. This activity provides students with an example of how it might feel to live with such a condition. Activity instructions, two different prompts, and two different worksheets are provided to implement this meaningful activity.

♥Pages 36- 37: Making Connections Worksheets. Students will be encouraged to make connections with others in their class by doing this activity.

♥Pages 38-39: Puzzle Piece Activity. The puzzle piece is a symbol of ASD. It represents the complexity and mystery of the disorder. In this activity students will creatively decorate their own puzzle piece to best represent who they are. There is also a note home about the activity if you would rather have this as a homework assignment. When each piece is completed, a big class puzzle would make a beautiful display!

♥Pages 40- 41: ASD Discussion Cards/ Writing Prompts.

♥Pages 42- 43: Lined Writing Papers with a Puzzle Heart.

♥Pages 44- 46: Puzzle Piece Mini-Book. This is a blank puzzle piece template (with lines) to create a mini-book.
