This packet has ideas that you can implement to help you work with a low functioning, nonverbal, non-compliant student with autism in speech therapy. Have you ever had a nonverbal student who was profoundly affected/disabled by autism in your class or on your caseload? I have! My student was violent; he scratched, bit, hit, and kicked during every therapy session. This therapy unit discusses how we had to overcome his behaviors before the speech work could begin! I have learned so much from my fellow therapists, teachers, books, and internet sites that I wanted to pass it on to others.
This is a rigorous thirty minute lesson plan for a speech therapy session.
There are multiple tasks included to change up the lesson plan but with enough consistency to make progress. I have included real photos of the manipulatives used and the reward system that this student prefers. Handouts (preference inventory, lesson plan examples) are included. Please understand if you download this product, some of the materials used are not included. This is a visual lesson plan listing materials I have found to be successful over the years.

"I provide direct services to a K-2 self contained room for children with Autism and this will be so incredibly helpful to me. I have several children who are very low functioning (multiple disability) and I'm really looking forward to trying these activities with them. Thank you for your work!"
