Over the past 20 years of providing speech and language therapy services in the public schools, at least once per year I have at least one student diagnosed with ASD who needs visual support/social stories to help him/her understand what is appropriate vs inappropriate touch. When I have utilized this tool, students improve awareness, and reduce unwanted behaviors
This topic is hard enough for any typical teenager and not alone our students with ASD. When I first developed this tool, I read many research articles and listened to what the parents of many of my students had to say, so I was very careful and tactful on the visuals I would present.
My first set was made with web images and cut and paste materials, but now thanks to TPT and other graphics and resources, I could upload a more updated version of my original social story.
Why is it important to address appropriate touch vs inappropriate touch with your teenage students diagnosed with ASD?
-It helps bring awareness
-It improves understanding with visual support
-It helps improve self-regulation
